If you’ve been looking for a new action movie to watch, look no further, because Southpaw is one of the best movies of 2015. This movie is based on a true story about boxing champion Billy "The Great" Hope played by Jake Gyllenhaal. Just like in the boxing ring, our hero faces many challenges outside of it that test his skill and self-worth. He has to overcome these obstacles in order to reclaim his life from drug addiction and domestic abuse. Southpaw is worth your time for its strong storyline, convincing performances, and realistic fight scenes. The film also arrives on the big screen without any trivial or annoying sub-plots that might clutter the main story. Jake Gyllenhaal gives an outstanding performance as the protagonist. He makes Billy Hope’s pain, anger, desperation, and hope seem so real that you forget you are actually watching a fictional character. And for those who are interested in boxing, there are enough bouts to satisfy your craving for some good old actual boxing action. Yes, Southpaw might be a little biased towards boxing due to its subject matter but this isn’t really an issue because it makes sense for the premise of the movie. The soundtrack is also a highlight in Southpaw. It’s filled with very powerful songs that fits the tone of the movie perfectly. Besides, Kendrick Lamar has another excellent performance as both an actor and musician. Southpaw is an action movie that should be watched by all fans of boxing who aren't afraid to laugh or cry. This movie deals with fighting but not just fighting, it deals with life, hope, love, and redemption. Director Antoine Fuqua's cinematic tour de force proves once again why he is worth paying attention to as an action film director. I give this film 4/5 stars.
